Character Information: Wiki entry

Personality:
Zelgadis is a very driven man, and that's the aspect that has dictated the course of his life in both good and bad ways the most of all. He was driven to grow stronger as a warrior, which played a role in his transformation. Driven to hunt down clues to a cure, which got him tangled up with Lina and all her exploits. Driven to maintain some semblance of composure and dignity, which makes him the greatest buttmonkey and straight man of the group.

He is a product of conflicting influences: He is, at heart, a kind and compassionate man, but his curse and subsequent struggles to be rid of it have twisted his judgment and personality to something that will, at times, actively try to be everything he isn't. He's done some shitty things for the sake of a cure, but the older he's gotten, the more restraint he's able to show (in most circumstances).

Another important aspect: He's terribly self-conscious. "I am a cold-hearted swordsman," he's told himself aloud to try and talk away the indignities Lina's travels put him through (having to dress as a bunny in a speedo, being used as a boat anchor due to his weight, etc.). He fancies himself a lot cooler than he actually is, and his pride suffers it a lot. He also seems to think he's a lot more hideous than he actually is, working hard to keep himself covered up in public and getting very visibly upset when the slightest remark on his image is brought up.

Hypocritically, he compliments himself and his cursed appearance when it gives him an edge in combat; the boy does not like to lose. There's no doubt a very skewed camera playing the film of his life in his head: More badass, more serious, more graceful and tragic than reality has shown. He's a bit (ok, a lot) of a drama queen in his own respect, yet has limited amounts of patience for similar qualities in other people. If he sees no benefit for him or a cause he champions in a situation, his patience is paper-thin and he's very apt to just walking out.

That said, he does have a weakness for helping children or cute girls, and the longer he's exposed to someone, the easier he can handle them. It's just the length of time it takes to get used to someone that's the challenge: either he'll get impatient, or the other person will. He's not the most amicable or social guy around.

And how could he be, he'd protest, being so obviously HIDEOUS AND CURSED WITH THIS AWFUL CHIMERA BODY!!!!

This is all incredibly taxing for group work, so it's a good thing Zelgadis can actually be of use to Lina and company rather than a burden: Zelgadis is clever and very learned. He is often seen mapping out their travels, charting courses by stars, and is very familiar with magical lore. Where most magical folk in the world stick to one style of magic (and maybe dabble in a little of another), Zelgadis is proficient in several – he's an expert in shamanism, has strong dark magic spells, and can execute basic healing spells. This stuff doesn't come easy, and it attests to his dedication to study and growth.

And, you know, having a magically inclined awful hideous cursed monster body.

Still, he's not humorless...it's just he can't take what he dishes out in that respect. His humor is of the dry, deadpan variety, typically muttering a line in the background of some bombastic slapstick happening to the rest of the group. He's prone to his own body humor (his hair is wire; it got stuck to a table he facedesked once), but he'd rather not talk about it (re: boat anchor).

At the end of the day, he's quite steadfast in loyalty to tried-and-true friends when it really matters, and has learned over time to value the time he has with them in spite of his own afflictions. And he's learned to read the signs that'll lead him into yet another embarrassing disaster, so he's not entirely a lost cause...
